Shower Pump - Intermitant Starting

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

Hello Question updated / expanded -22/04/22 I have a Stuart Turner Monsoon 4bar Twin Shower pump feeding 2 showers only. The Hot water to the pump is supplied from a side connection on the Cylinder in the Airing cupboard, and the pump Cold water supply is fed from a cold water tank in the attic. The shower pump is situated under the Hot water tank in the airing cupboard. Pipework to the shower goes up to the attic and "teed" to the 2 showers The hot water to the taps is fed from the top connection of the cylinder in the Airing cupboard, this cylinder is fed from a 2nd cold water tank in the Attic The Hot Water system is not pressurized. The shower pump is therefore totally independent to the Hot and Cold Water supply to the Taps, however, whenever hot water is run from the taps, the shower pump starts for 1 or 2 seconds. More Often than not, the pump starts when the hot tap is turned off, and doesn't run while the hot water is running. Previously the pump was only feeding 1 shower, and we never had any problems, its only since the 2nd shower was connected has the problem started to occur. Any suggestions on how to prevent this occurring would be appreciated My thoughts are, a Non return Valve fitted in the Hot Water Supply from the pump to the shower, preventing a possible flow back into the airing cupboard tank when Hot water is being used from the Taps. Thank you

Hi, you may still create the issue with the non return valve as it will close abruptly. A shock arrest or will absorb the pressure. Sometimes you need more that one. Best regards.

I think you have connection problem as you described , the hot water tap is connected to the top of the cylinder and that mean the pump is connected before the cylinder and it's connected to the water inlet from the cold water tank in the loft , so the pump posted the pressure inside the cylinders and most of the pressures is going back to cold water tank on the loft via the over flow pipe !!!! the same way you have the cold water inlet from the tank to the pump , you should have the hot water inlet from the hot water cylinder to the pump , and the booster pump has to be negative pressure to do the job properly otherwise you'll have a problem and it will not function as required .

Hi there , Is all the installation pipe work in 22mm as far as it can be before reducing down to 15mm as close to shower valve as possible?? If yes then the problem could be a few things , faulty flow switch on the pump Faulty PCB A leak on the system Or even just trapped air ( bleed the system without pump running until hot and cold run with no air) Hope you get it sorted 👍🏽
