MOT on top of sand??

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.04 PM

Need help... Might be fine, but need to check first. I'm doing my own patio, and for reasons pertaining to how the last one was laid I need to ask... Is there an issue laying the MOT type 1 on top of a small layer of sand? Basically the layers will be, from top to bottom.. Patio Slab - 32mm Mortar - usual MoT type 1 - about 50-75mm Sand - about 5-10mm Hard compacted soil It's going to be a job and a half to remove the sand, but will it cause any issues with the sub base? Or will it be ok as long as it sufficiently wacked down? Thanks for your help. D.

I personally can't forsee any issues. If you're worried though you could rotavate the sand into the soil before whacking your first load of MOT into it? It only costs about £70 to hire a decent-heavy-duty one. Alternatively, put some landscape matting over the top. All the best Dan

If it was me I would remove the sand in time the sand might wash out and could cause patio to sink

The sand will be fine if compacted. I would advise a minimum of 100mm of MOT Type 1 and a minimum of 50mm sand cement base to slabs.
