Scaffolding Poles as Curtain Rods

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

I have a Conservatory/extension in my new house and the left hand side is low wall and windows, the front is is low wall 2 windows and french doors, and the right side and back walls are part of the original house so both are full brick walls. However the back wall is mainly an archway leading to the lounge and the right wall is mainly an archway leading to the kitchen. I am keen to hang curtains for privacy due to the open plan layout. However I want to avoid these blocking out the view into the garden when open, and avoid drilling into UPVC if possible. As my furniture is quite industrial, I had an idea to use scaffolding poles at curtain rods, but I am not sure how feasible it is. I plan to fit a scaffolding pole to the right side wall to run across the front side of the conservatory. Then add an elbow and run another scaffolding pole from it across the left hide side into fitting on the back wall. I would then either order a specially made curtain or sew 4 curtains together, which will sit on the left hand and back wall when opened behind what is essentially a pillar because of the archway. So my question is, as the elbow wouldnt have any support (as it would stop me having just one curtain that closes), would having the structure fitted into the two walls provide enough support for the weight of it with an extra large curtain that is going to be about 6 metres wide and 2.25 metres long? I hope that makes sense!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I think you will struggle to use scaffolding poles. But you could certainly used galvanised gas pipe which will allow a full range of fittings including elbows and clips to pin it back to the wall. Further you are more likely to find curtain rings to fit galvanised gas pipe.

The plan to use scaffold poles wouldn't work due to there being no support in the left hand front corner unless you had a pole off the elbow to the floor, also the weight of the curtains would have to be taken into consideration, rather than use scaffold poles I would recommend key clamp as it is lighter and the poles vary in diameter (from 26mm) check out themetalstore.co.uk for more information.

Fit ordinary curtain poles attach them to the ceiling, sorry but I think your idea will look awful and be very heavy once curtains are fitted.

Hi, Yes, you can successfully use scaffolding rods, but use aluminium scaffolding rods. They are the same size as the iron ones, they look like the iron ones, but they are many times lighter.
