Topsoil and over seeding
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM
I had a new lawn laid about 18 months ago but it looks bit thin, how do I know which topsoil and seed I need and how much topsoil for about 200m2 Someone suggested using ornamental grass seed as it’s fine and won’t stand out too much if it doesn’t match my grass I have now. Also I looked at miracle grow seeds but it seems the box they do only covers 14m2 . ( I have already fed and scarified the lawn.) Any advise welcome

You should use a thin layer of good compost not topsoil raked it after seeding to make sure the seeds have contact with moisture and soil. Keep damp in dry spells and be patient. 2 weeks you should start to see seeds sprouting

Hi Aaron,
If the lawn is good and level then you may not need much topsoil. When I scarify I leave the rake deep which then provides a good amount of topsoil for over-seeding. At the same time, if you are overseeding the entire lawn try not to worry too much about varieties compared with trying to match up and patch-seed. The hardier and thicker varieties of seed will contain some rye grass as opposed to the finer 'bowling green' lawnseed.
If it were me, I would get my scarifier out again, over-seed and feed the entire lawn with a hardier variety and water in immediately (many dry feeds require watering in to avoid burning). You can't be too generous; a spreader is a good idea; otherwise a good handful of seed every square meter is my metric.
All the best
Dan
