How do I remove old grout/silicone on base of recycled basin and toilet

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

We opted to reuse the old toilet and basin when we renovated the bathroom to keep costs down, but there is what looks like small lumps of old silicone/grout or epoxy grout around the base of each and we can't seem to be able to get it off. The floor has new slate tiles so we are wary about taking heavy tools to the job incase we damage the floor. I would have thought the trade who was installing it would have cleaned it up before he installed it. We are trying to do the renovation remotely so have not been able to get to site and due to a catalogue of other issues we have since parted company with the original trade, so I cannot get him back to sort it! I am now left looking for a solution. It is very unsightly, if I put protection on the floor can I sand it off? I don't want to have to remove the units

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Silicone can be removed with a silicone removing solvent. It takes about 10-15 mins before it penetrates through making it easier to remove. The left over grout will have to be scraped off carefully avoiding damage to the fitting. Good luck

You will have to use a Stanley knife to try and dig it all out

In some occasions you can grout/silicone over them to make them look fresh. Cut out any lumps and bumps prior with a sharp tool like a stanly blade re grout/silicone and it will look at good as new.
