Bathroom Fitting

How to tell builder I'm not paying for all the labour days because its a bad job?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

I've read a few answers already but getting confused with it all. Basically 2 cowboys that originally came highly recommended have done a bad job on my new bathroom and I asked them to stop half way through. A combination of very poor tiling work that is uneven and bad lipping up to 10mm, the window trim isn't flush and the angles don't even meet up, some tiles are recessed and some bulge out, the lines of the grout aren't straight, they bent a pipe to 'fit' which then caused a slow leak and damage to the kitchen ceiling - also had to call emergency plumber to fix the job. And when asked to stop for the day so I could assess they stormed off and said I was being picky! On top of all that, the receipts they provided have things on like a laser line leveller, trowel, cable ties, masking tape - all equipment they should already own and not have me paying for! So how do I write all this up in reply to their invoice? They have already had a deposit for materials and want more money. I'm going to have to pay someone else to rip everything they've done out, buy new tiles and start again. Any help is very much appreciated!!

Hello Jodie, Sorry to hear this, however, your not the first and you won't be the last. I'll come straight to the point, under no circumstances let them back into your house, find out as much information on them, names, address, company name, write everything down what has happened, take as many photos of the work been carried out, absolutely everything, once you have all the evidence gathered, contact trading standards and citizens advice, get these on your side for support, then make a claim to court for loss of money and enforce judgment on the builders. If you feel at any time threatened by their tactics, then call the police. DO NOT PART WITH ANYMORE MONEY. Be Safe, Stay safe! James Elite Security & Building Services

Photos would help a lot before commenting on the work. Masking tape and cable ties, screws, nails, clips, any consumables used as part of and required to complete the project are thus chargeable. Tools are not, unless it was for a specific task, in which case should be hired.

If you have payed money up front and your not happy with what’s been done, don’t pay anymore. Speak to someone at the CAB and go from there. If it’s as bad as you say, it will probably end to be restarted unfortunately.

I would also like to start by apologizing for these cowboys who give us good guys a bad name. Under no circumstances pay them another penny. The service you have received from them is not fit for purpose. They have to legal right to claim for, charge you for tools needed for the job. The fact they don't have them is alarming enough. Trading standards will help you with this, there is now more dodgy builders then ever. Do not let them intimidate you into paying. Simply respond to the invoice outlining the issues and that authorities have been notified and any attempts to contact you will be met with police action on harassment charges. You could also say you will be putting all of this on social media. Once again I am sorry for your troubles, there are many very good, conscientious installers out there. Ask for photo evidence, have a look on their social media. I show my work on Facebook, tik tok and Instagram. If you can't see them on there, move on to the next one.
