nails through new roof felt
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM
We are currently having a new roof on our bungalow we are also having solar panels fitted. The solar people have fitted the frames for the panels which will be flush with the roof. Apparently they have nailed through the felt, the roofer is not at all happy about this, is it likely to cause future problems.

You could possibly get water running down nail shanks, especially if you have any cracked tiles under the solar panels which won't be visible, check it before they leave site

It depends on many factors, the tile battens are also nailed through the felt but with shorter nails and attached to the rafters, if the solar panel mounting system is fully compatible with your roof tiles than you shouldn't have to worry the only way water it might find a way in is if it enters at a higher level than the panels brackets and runs down where the nails have punctured the system it will make things worst if the felt is sinking in the same spot, condensation or driving rain.

Yes, this will cause problems at later date, particularly if they have pierced through the felt, over time water will ingress, felt will crack, mould will form. You should look to have Installers resolve issues sooner rather than later.
