How to install membrane on closeboarded roof?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

Hi, I need to replace clay tiles on a closeboarded roof. I want to keep the boards for building stability, as the building is old and a bit unusual. My question is: Do you put the membrane directly on the closeboards, then battens and tiles on top of that, or do you need to also put battens on the boards, then the membrane, then another batten and the tiles? I want to do this outside bit to building regs, so that later, when I put insulation in from inside, I can get a certificate. Any advice would be very welcome as I can't find it in the building regs docs.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Ideally counter batten ( vertically) over the close boarding then breathable membrane then battens then tiles. Pull the membrane reasonably taught to allow a gap between the felt and boards to prevent a build up of interstitial condensation that may cause the boards to become damp and rot

The first answer was correct, counterbatten onto ply board then felt but just instead of rolling it tight to allow air flow it needs some sag as to allow any water to run down without trapping behind the tile lattes and rotting them its just a matter of finding a happy medium nothing exact and ten tile in as usual pretty straight forward for someone to do themselves
