Non return valve?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

My upstairs bathroom sometimes smells, can't place to toilet, sink or bath. Seems to happen when another bathroom in the house is used. Someone has suggested that u bend is drying out - that the flush in the other bathrooms causes vacumn effect and the solution would be to install some kind of valve to stop it drying out. Do you know what this valve is called? Is it just for the toilet or used for the sink and bath too? Difficult, expensive to install? Thanks very much

One way valves can be installed. Typically called AAV's Replacing traps with a type including an AAV's is an option. Accurate investigation to determine the best option would be required.

Sounds like a badly or incorrectly install soil vent pipe and waste pipes. Syphoning water from bath and or sink traps when the other bathroom is used. Lots of information available on the web regarding correct waste pipe and soil vent pipe configuration. S traps have also have a tendency to syphoning and should be changed to a trap with anti syphoning vale incorporated.Again these an be found on the web I hope this helps you diagnose the source of the problem

poorly designed soil pipework, is it vented to atmosphere or does it have an aav fitted ?, aav will overcome syphoning of traps but will not overcome back pressure in soil stacks or drains, back pressure will push sewer smells back through traps, get a qualified plumber to look at it for you.

If the problem happens when another bathroom is being used. The problem is caused by waste water going down waste pipe creating a vacuum, Pulling the water out of the traps. To cure this you would need to install anti syphon traps.
