Overboard a concrete ceiling?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.28 PM

Hi all, Have a ceiling that i want to overboard. ( Dont want to spend the money on stripping the existing artex ceiling off) Was thinking about using standard 9.5mm plasterboard but was wondering on the process. Is there anyway i can directly attach the plasterboard to the concrete ceiling? videos ive seen are either creating a stud frame or using dot and dab cheers

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I wouldn't dot and dab..using board adhesive as the combined weight may cause problems One way is to locate the original joists and screw 25 by 50mm batons in a regular spaced pattern to suit your choice of plasterboard but 12.5mm thickness If it's over a solid ceiling then fix batters directly using the correct fixing

I would advise creating stud frame and fixing to previous joists. Dot and dab would also work but I wouldn't advise as the weight may possibly become an issue. Both would reduce ceiling height roughly the same. I would say the pros for fixing your plasterboard onto stud work are alot higher than using the dot and dab method. The only positive for dot and dab is potentially the speed of application but I would not recommend. Depending on your artex, scrape as much away as possible to get a flat as you can to help with your installation

Hi Michael, You must have been quoted silly sums to strip of artex if you are considering overboarding and expecting to be cheaper still. Strip it yourself, your only looking to knock down the peaks of the artex and remove any loose artex and then apply pre grit. From there the plasterer can bond out and apply skim coat no problem.

Use either wooden Batons or British gypsum mild steel furring bars at 600mm centres fixed directly to the existing concrete ceiling with appropriate fixings and a 12.5 plasterboard.

If you have a plasterboard ceiling already there with artex on and you don’t like it and you don’t want to knock the artex off Ask your Plasterer to apply a bonding coat to level a ceiling off then plaster in the normal way or use 2x1 battens as the other chap previously said fix to the ceiling and put the 12.5 boards or 9.5 onto the battens burying the old ceiling 😉
