Sewerage smell, downstairs toilet

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.28 PM

Hi. We have started getting a sewerage smell from our downstairs bathroom, suspect the toilet. It seems to occur when the upstairs toilet is flushed. Running the upstairs or downstairs shower initially clears the smell. The upstairs en-suite was built afterwards and has a soil pipe that runs down from upstairs then a pipe that runs under the floor and across the house to the downstairs toilet. Taken floor up and can see no leaks. If we run upstairs shower, or flush toilet we can lift the drain cover and see it flowing away into the drain as expected. Google Search suggests it's the downstairs toilet seal. I've checked top of soil pipe and it has an air filter fit and is clear . Would you suspect it is the downstairs seal? Would applying something like LS-X sealant solve this as the seal looks ok but possible had a gap?? Any advice would be appreciated Regards Andy

poor design or installation of soil pipe system, is the stack vented to open air, or does it have an air inlet valve at its head ?, also if the invert level at base of soil stack is not deep enough when up stairs wc is flushed and water hits invert it will cause back pressure that will push drain smells through wc trap, basin bath or shower traps ,get a qualified plumber to check it out for you.
