Can't get hot water unless heating is on with NEST heat link/thermostat

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.28 PM

Hi We recently bought a new home that already had a Nest heat link and thermostat, which we have taken on. Everything was working well and the system had learnt our schedule, giving us heating and hot water at certain times of the day. Due to a kitchen refurbishment, we needed to move the heat link into the hall and ever since then we can't get hot water until the heating is switch on to manual. So we are either boiling hot (heating on) and have lovely hot water, or we are comfortable (heating off) but have freezing cold water.... please help us fix the problem.... The system is a Y configuration... if that helps?!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Its been wired incorrectly. Just get the people who changed it back again to sort it out.

Good morning, to me it sounds like the 3 port is stuck. A Y plan system, means that your motorised valve controls your heating and hot water separately. I will probably ask the engineer who installed the next to reattend and check that the 3 port valve is not jammed If that does not seem to work, he can maybe check the wiring.

It sounds like the heat link has been wired incorrectly. With a Y plan heating system you need the hot water off terminal connected as hot water takes priority

I would definitely call the installer back again as he has mixed up the switch wire from the 3 port valve with the manual override on the system. The cables need tracing back to find switch wires for the hot water and heating and separate to operate the valve properly when either the thermostat is call or someone turns a tap.
