Flaking paint around plaster beads on fresh plaster

Hi, im looking to see if anyone has come across this same problem on a job. On a new extension that we have built im having issues with paint continuously flaking of in certain areas (Around all new plaster beads on doors/window and around window area) The walls were dot/dabbed and plastered in December and we mist coated, base coated and top coated in the same way we have always done and for some reason the paint flaked off. i initially put it down to moisture in the room as it was a wet spell so after a couple of attepmts i left the room for 3 months to dry out. I went back yesterday to finish the painting and its still happening?! The room has trickle vents and extractor fan as its a utility room and the customer has left the window cracked and gently heated the room to help with air circulation. I cant see that it is still moisture so im wondering if its an issue with the beads, plaster or even the paint. I have been decorating for 17 years and never had this issue apart from a garage conversion on the same project where we used the same paint as in the utility room. In that room we eventually got the paint to hold but cant seem to sort it in the utility. The paint is a mixed valspar trade flat matt Has anyone come across this and solved it? Any advice would be great before i smash all of the plaster beads out! Neil

Was the plastering fully dried before you painted? If not then painting is most likely to flake all the time. To prevent this happening again use wall primer such as zinsser

Seems very strange mate. Try saturating with zinsser b.i.n good luck.

The plaster must have been still wet before painting, unless the plasterer has over troweled and polished the wall to much.

Clean down throughly and then apply a primer sealer I recommend Zinsser GARDZ. Good luck

I would firstly check the areas with a moisture tester. I have come across this problem a few times, if totally dry i would gently sand off the loose areas. I normally would give the areas a thin coat of solvent based undercoat, this usually sorts the problem.

Yes, have come across something similar Suggest rubbing it back and using a decent primer and how about using a kitchen or bathroom paint, designed to cope with the moisture

Close up the room and run a dehumidifier for a period to see what comes out of the walls. Any more than an egg cup or two in 24 hrs and you’ll know that moisture is the issue. I don’t like moisture meters in this situation. There is no standard to test to. Some walls hold a bit more than others. A moisture meter won’t tell you what the wall is letting out. That’s the key. Also I don’t like zinsser bin as a primer. Great stain blocker but average primer. Peel stop or Gardz are good. What are the beads made of? I came across some compressed paper ones recently and once they blow outwards you need to replace them. Tick an eco box on the build but awful to repair. If they are solid and the walls are dry then I would buy isomat primer pro as the primer underneath your top coats. Good luck

sounds like it's still wet as the plaster is usually heavier around the beads to bring it out so they will be the last parts to dry . try a little patiencee unless your in a hurry but don't do what some do and put a log burner on full blast thinking it will dry the plaster out quicker it won't your new walls will fall off ha 😉
