Insulation

Can I use 2 types of insulation in my loft?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

Hello, my loft is shaped like a T and currently has fiberglass rolls put down (but it needs topping up). To save money, I wanted to remove the fiberglass rolls from one of the end of the "T" and put down some insulation boards instead as I need storage space. I would have re-use the fiberglass rolls I removed to top up the existing insulation I have in the rest of the loft (it has been put down 10 years ago so it's not at the recommended height). Is it possible to use different types of insulations or would it compromise its efficiency? Thank you, Matt.

Hello what I would recommend is boarding the loft space so you can use for storage but insulate below the boarding. I would also insulate between the rafters above using 100/150mm celotex. Make sure the fibreglass insolation is away from the corners as this will cause sweating if roof space is not ventilated correctly

You can free you whichever insulation materials you wish, as long as you avoid preventing ventilation (loft need airflow). Although if you are intending to store items, it’s best to part board where required!
