Are we being cheated? Any outside authority I can contact?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.42 PM
The final bill came to £2800 which was about £1000 above the original quote. They did extra work but to be honest what they did does not amount to the extra charge. They have built up what they did to sound like a lot, but were here for two days and would have been anyway. I think the extra is unjustified and wonder if there is any outside body I can contact to make my complaint.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

for anyone to answer this you need to explain what the original quote was and what for, then say what the extras were for and how much the extras came to.

Did they explain that the extra work would need to be paid for?
Also, what extra work was it?
Did the materials cost alot and how long did it take to complete the extra work?
All these little extras that customers ask to be done do take up alot of time, especially of it's alot of extra little things to do, and this needs to be paid for.
When ever customers ask for extra work to be done, I explain that it will need to be paid for and how I would charge them for this.
If they agree to the pricing, then happy days, I go go ahead with the extra works.
But I always get this in writing, usually via email or text message.
As for complaining to an outside body, you've probably could go to trading standards..... But why bother?

Hi, what was the extra work carried out. Like most things across the industry prices are rising at an alarming rate, we always discuss extras and charges before completing work but without hearing the whole story it’s difficult to comment. I would ask the tradesman for a breakdown of the costs to try and establish if your being over charged

Hi, the previous answer is correct you need to give a break down of the original work you agreed on and then what extra works you asked for and agreed. Changing things halfway through or even from the beginning can have big implications when it comes to compliance with the regulations and hence the price
