Bricklaying & Repointing

How to fill a large brick pier with concrete?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.42 PM

Dear experts. I have 2 3-brick x 3-brick piers, each 30 courses tall; i.e. they're about 2m. They're currently hollow and I would like to fill them with concrete. I was told by the electrician who installed the cabling for the lights that will go on top that I should use a wet mix but also that I should fill the void in stages to avoid placing too much strain on the walls and risking bowing the sides, or worse. Can you suggest what cement/ballast ratio I should use, what the consistency of the mix should be, and what procedure I should follow? Specifically, how many separate pourings and how long should I wait between one and pouring the next layer? Thank you for your advice.

I would suggest you put a rebar down the centre and fill in stages

A 4 to 1 lean mix is perfect in stages, with rebar through the middle, not too wet so it doesn’t come through the brickwork

Best to build the pillar using bed joint reinforcement mesh 5 to 1 mix not to wet Do in 3 stages Do not compact concrete as it will put too much pressure on brickwork Leave 1 day between each concrete pour Pj
