Bricklaying & Repointing

Old and new brickwork not tied together existing house wall

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.42 PM

I had the original back door removed and bricked up this January. The brickie didn't complete the mortar joints and promised to come back ( several times) but has not shown up. Also I noticed he has not tied in the new bricks into the existing brickwork. Are there any building regs to govern the standards of this type of construction work and does this pose any safety issues ( now or in the future)? Many thanks

The best way to brick up an opening is to chop out the bricks on either side and insert your new bricks into this space and do the same all the way up which means removing the side half bricks every other course. This way it matches the whole of the wall and you don’t need ties and you don’t have a line of mortar down each side. The bricky may have been a bit lazy and if he had not done it right then that’s why he hasn’t come back. Good luck.

Bricking up doorways or openings all the half bricks along the sides of the opening need cutting out so the new course can be tied into existing course of bricks making it a continuous course and addi g strength to the bond It looks better too especially if mortar joints are match the best it can be
