Hallo! I've a shed full of half used paints and primers, and a small decorating job that needs doing. Rather than buying new, do you think I could mix old Zinsser Bullseye 123 and a Leyland trade acylic primer? Both are water based (and been sitting in my shed for about 18 months!).
The walls to be painted are new plaster (don't worry, will mist coat first) up to a meter height, then over old green paint, which has a shiny/vinyl finish (I've given it a good sanding).
Because of the mixed colours/finishes I think a solid primer/base coat is a good idea for uniform walls, just wondering if I can use this old stuff up.. 🤔
Thanks for your help!
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Really and truly there is only one way to find out! Just make sure it mixes well and it’s not gloopy from age, also the fact that it’s water based is a bonus as oils would probably be a bit more problematic

First answer and the best advice is always no, but as the paints are water based I would try it on a piece of plaster, see if you can see some major differences from when it was new, if you can see or smell at least one, don't. If all seems fine, go ahead and do your job, worst case scenario is you will just waste a bad product and redo the job with a new paint
If the tins have been opened and they are more than 12 months old you should get rid of them. Paint does go off and if you use them you may end up having to re-do the job to get rid of smells.
The other issue is mixing primers that are not made the same. Even Bulls eye 123 and bulls eye 123plus are incompatible. The different chemicals in each could cause a reaction and make the combination unusable.
Buy some new primer - you'll be glad you did.

No
I wouldn’t use the old paint on new plaster.
It is true after a certain time it will start to go off and smell, also contain nasty yellowish water & dried bits of paint.
