Patio not even?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.04 PM

I paid for my patio to be relayed because the slabs were loose and moving. All they have done is lift each slab and put a concrete sand mix under. Is this correct? as when I challenged him over this, he said it would be solid for years. But the paving slabs are not completely even and big gaps in-between the slabs that I asked him to fill which has not so far been done. I did not see them compact anything, just lift slabs up and put a concrete sand mix under the slabs. It was not a cheap either, they had good reviews, I am not an expect, so when I raised issues he said its solid and I could put anything heavy on it and it will not move so I didn't know what to say as I do not know what I am talking about. I am just concerned as I want a garden room on top and the installers told me to make sure I have an even solid base.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In my 23 years of landscaping this is what should have been done. To lift the paving and dig out the old sub base. Then to put down mot type 1 and compact down with a wacker plate for the sub base.To relay the paving on a full bed of wet mix concrete. Then to point the patio using easy joint gel crystals. Simon

Hi Ruth the best bet will be to lift and breakaway and cement mix under and then put a hardcore subbase then relay the slabs and point sand and cement the gaps if you would like me to come and view for more advice and a free quotation then please contact me Thanks Ryan

The most common cause is that your pavers have been laid on an uneven aggregate bed. This greatly affects the structural integrity of your patio, making it more likely to break down underneath the surface.

All depending on what the sub-base is like underneath the slabs already if the mot is already solid it will be fine but the concrete bed underneath should of been smashed out and re-done to be able to get a good finish on the slabs, and if the existing bed is in bad shape then theres a high chance the slab will start moving again over time
