Bitumen internal floor
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.03 PM
Hi. I have a 1955 house with a bitumen floor that double up as damp proof. I’m laying some laminate and have a raise lip in the floor. I’ve tried sanding it limited success. I have a roofing blow torch. Could I apply heat to the floor to level out the lip
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

No I’d advise smoothing the lip using Ardex NA, it is also a good damp proof that can be applied straight onto bitumen without priming 👍

The bitumen in a house of that age may contain asbestos, and strongly advise either having it checked first or do not disturb it, latex coating does not provide damp proof protection, unless a specific liquid membrane is used, then you could use a self leveling compound on top.

The best way to do it is to use self-levelling compound to create a new subfloor layer.
Using a torch can make the area more liable to crash and crumble in time.

I fear if you use a blow torch you'd create dangerous emotions in your house. You might use a hammer and chisel to remove the ridge to a satisfactory finish . Always wear protective clothing as the original tiles may have contained asbestos.
