Detached garage conversion
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM
Hi, I have a single detached garage that I am looking to convert into an office space that will be used for a few hours a day. It is single skin brickwork. Can anyone tell me what thickness insulation I’d need for the walls please? Is this something that will be dictated by building regs? I’m trying to maximise the internal space. Thanks

You will need building regs approval and comply with the current insulation regs. You may be able to do it on a building notice rather than go for full approval. It will depend on your local area requirements

Use King's span sheets. 3b2 frame then insulation is 50mm thick that would be sufficient and keep you warm

You will need building regs. 50 mm kingspan in the walls and a 100 mm kingspan in floor

The first answer was good but normally the building control doesn’t give you what you need for the wall insulation as it’s down to you on how much you want to pay as the materials can be quite expensive. Normally I would Fix 3x2 timbers to the wall and then use 1 inch insulation boards as 2 inch boards come just in front of the timber then 12mm plasterboard over the lot then skim which gives you a 1 hour fire retardant.
Just ask your builder for a price and advise. Good luck
