Do I install roof vents if my boiler is in the attic?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

Hi I’ve just brought a house without roof vents and a boiler in the attic. I’m being told that I obviously need roof vents but also being told by my plumber that will cause problems for my boiler. The boiler will kick in if the temperature in the attic drops below 6 degrees Celsius to stop the pipes from getting frost damage. The 2 results could be our heating being on constantly during the winter months and as with no heating source in the attic it won’t be able to satisfy the temperature demand and also frozen pipes. I fell like I’m between a rock and a hard place atm. Any advise or expert knowledge with this dilemma would help please

Yes i would fit 2 vents as attic will get hot in summer keep them away from boiler and make sure attic is well insulated as may freeze in winter all pipe should be lagged boiler should have a rail around it for safety attic floored

Frost(ice) will only start to build up 3.5 c and below I very much doubt that you’re loft will ever go below this. Your boiler which you say is in the loft will be vented through the wall.

If boiler is vented properly I.e flue there’s no need for roof ventilation unless condisation builds up then roof vents will need to be installed But if boiler has been installed correctly then no need for other additional ventilation

No! Listen to the plumber… the roofer sounds like he’s trying to scam pointless work out of you. Probably charge a ridiculous amount too for a £35 unit. Use common sense…. Is the kitchen cupboard ventilated when the boilers in there? Or the utility room? It’s on the plumber to make sure the boiler is fit correctly… don’t waste money on a roofer unnecessarily
