Send energy created by solar panels on garage roof back to house

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

I have bought a solar panel kit and plan to install it on my garage roof. My garage already has mains power with it's own fuse box. The existing power cable runs under the patio somewhere and is not easily accessible. I was wondering if it was possible to utilise the existing connection to the house to send the energy created by the panels back to the house to supplement the energy being used there?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You can’t connect back into the house electrics fed via the grid unless you have the work done by an MCS certified contractor.

This is not something you can do DIY. First of all it would take you years to train to a level where you’d be able to be confident your design and installation was safe and competently done to all current building and electrical regulations. Secondly the work should be carried out and notified (what you’ll think of as singed off) by an installer registered with both an MCS and part P scheme this is a legal requirement.

You can do this but you will need a converter and separate isolation for the solar panels
