Timber size for a single storey hip roof.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

What size timber can be used on a hip roof with tiles covering a 5m x 4m area. Seems 4 x 2 is no longer a option.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You have three choices, get the trusses made up by truss manufacturers ,use 6/2 if doing it yourself or ask building control what they require. Good luck alex.

Best to refer to the trada span tables to determine section sizes, your inspector should be able to assist.

Theres many options here. Presuming there is no drawings being provided by an Architect (or the like) with Structural Engineers drawings then personally i would go with a minimum of a 145x45mm (6x2”)rafter size, grade C24. Maximum of 220x45mm (9x2”) this being a bit overkill for a 5x4m. If forming the rafters to a ridge beam, id use (2x)220x45mm for this. All the best, Jed.
