Steel lintel for fireplace

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

We are completely redoing the front brick surround of our fireplace. We are where the next row of bricks would be above the firebox and will be reusing the original steel lintel. I was wondering if the lintel itself needs mortar to attach to the chimney. Also if the bricks need a bed of mortar on top of the lintel. Thank you for any advice.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Re-use the original lintel (if the opening is to the original specifications) as it will still fit, with it resting on an overlap of half a brick either side. Then re-cement the bricks on top of the lintel to the original design: If however, the new opening is larger or smaller, then make sure you get a new lintel for a larger opening or, cut down the original lintel for a smaller opening: Always ensuring that it’s long enough to rest on half a brick either side. I hope this has been informative:

Personally I would change for concrete lintel. And use slate to dry pack and level. Once level use cement. If to small to get cement mix in dry pack again. Make shore all joins have been wetted down before cement mix. Nothing stick to dust. Innes construction
