Why does our house smell bad after we emulsioned the ceiling?

Last week my husband put 2 coats of Crown matt emulsion on our living room ceiling. The house now smells very bad and the ceiling has a granular look to it. I researched online and as a result we thought maybe the paint was off. However when we examined the paint pot and smelled it, it seemed like normal paint. The previous owner of our house was a heavy smoker and we wondered could that be the reason? The ceiling was not visibily brown (unlike other areas of the house) we suspect the family may have slapped on a cheap paint prior to putting the house on the market. What do you suggest we do about this problem? I have read about cleaning with mild bleach or a shellac primer but I do not want to give my husband more work unless absolutely necessary. We have already bought more emulsion (Dulux) to repaint it.
