Fixing railway sleepers onto a level concrete bed

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

Hello, What's the best way to fix railway sleepers onto a concrete bed (using nails, screws or adhesive etc?)? The sleepers are being used to make a raise planting bed on the concrete. The sleepers will only be 2-3 rows high. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Nick

Hi. Best bet is ‘L’ shaped brackets. Two per sleeper, screwed into concrete and into sleeper 👍

Hi, if the beds are a full sleeper length-2.4m and maybe 60cm wide then I really wouldn't bother screwing them down once they're filled with soil the bed will weigh around 2 tonne and isn't going anywhere! Smaller beds, Maybe a 90cm cube will still weigh a tonne and will be hard to move, but if you've definitely really got to absolutely fix them to the floor I'd use 150 or 120mm torx frame screws drilled through the timber on the angle into the concrete- you will need to pre drill the concrete.

Stick lengths of threaded bar in the concrete at 800mm or so intervals, plumb with a spirit level as the concrete goes down, then cut to length once cured, drill the sleepers and countersink the hole first with an 1 1/2" or 2inch spade bit then slide them over the rods and use a nut and washer to tighten up.
