Insulation

Underfloor insulation for kitchen + living room above cellar

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

We live in a Victorian terrace which was built in 1895. We are looking to insulate a few areas as the house is always cold. 1. Under our living room and dining room we have a large cellar which is well ventilated. What would be the best material to use for insulating between joists bearing in mind that we have electrical cables running on the joists so PIR boards are not necessarily the best option? 2. The kitchen has suspended floor with a large void underneath (over a foot in depth). Can PIR boards be used for underfloor insulation in case we are planning to install underfloor heating (we are going to tile over cement boards) or we need to look for different options?

Hello, First, use a fibreglass wool insulation for the cellar ceiling, this is fire resistant and easy to work around the cables underneath, you will have to board or strap across the joints to keep the insulation In place. PIR boards can be used under the kitchen, use the crawl space to install and again use builders straps to keep it in place. This will be fine with underfloor heating in the future.

Both can/must be insulated with fire resistant wool insulation (not fibre glass). The kitchen area the insulation secured in place with netting also fire resistant, this won't cause any problems for underfloor heating as it sits between the joists and your heating can be installed above joist level. The insulation in the cellar would have to be fireboarded to meet health and saftey regulations as this would stand over a mtr. Also may be worth mentioning if your crawl space doesn't have ventilation, air bricks may have to be installed this is to stop the area sweating causing mold and rot.... if you insulate you have got to ventilate.. pir boards are expensive and the wool works just aswell if not better if done correctly
