Laminate on bowed and uneven floorboards

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

Hi, We’re looking at laminate flooring for our living room but the floorboards are quite bowed and uneven. Would laminate be possible? Is this something the fitter would be able to sort out? How might they look at levelling it out? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

Hi, You should discuss this with the fitter prior to commencement of the project. There can be various options available including: self levelling compound, potential repair of floor boards, installation of sub floor e.g. plywood etc. Hope you find it useful.

Hi As you are aware a floor needs to be level in order to obtain a good quality floor installation .Due to the current floor being wooden boards you can firstly screw all board individually then the option of a sub floor would come into play should the previous method not be a option or remove and replace with 18mm ply if the condition of floor boards is poor .Best to establish the method with your contractor before installation .

Depending how bad the floorboards are you could ply the floor and screw the boards down screwing a screw every 250mm then lay your laminate on top if it still looks uneven you could pour self levelling compound to make it flat then lay on top of that

I wouldn’t recommend doing self leveling compound on top of wood floor boards or over plywood. I can tell from my experience will end up coming off due to woods movements when gets in contact with moisture. Just use plywood only to make it even or a very thick underlay.
