Bathroom Fitting

What is the preferred order of tasks when completing a bathroom refurb?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

Hi everyone I'm looking for advice on the best order of completing jobs in a bathroom refurbishment. I've decided to get my little project going after being let down, but just need some advice from the experts. I know for some jobs I'll have to get a trades person in, but want to know realistically what I can do myself and how best to go about it. When it comes to flooring, if I'm tiling the walls does the floor go down first before anything else, or do I tile first and then lay the floor? Do I fit skirting boards? Does the flooring go down and then the new toilet and sink fitted on top, or do I install them first and then cut the flooring around them? I'm looking at getting Lino flooring. If I'm tiling the walls, does the new toilet and sink get fixed against the tiles, or do I tile around them? (I'm not sure that I am tiling as it might be too much work for me). I'm going to be replacing the rad for a towel rad onto the existing pipework, it'll just be taller. What issues do I need to consider for this? I have a combi boiler. Please feel free to impart any pearls of wisdom that may help. I'm quite a sensible DIYer so won't do anything that's too complicated, but I am keen to have a go at as much as I can. Many thanks in advance

Hi There, To answer few of your questions, it will be the following: • First of all, make sure water/ Electrity has been isolated before stripping out the bathroom. • Tiling walls & floors : when deciding what to install first, it all depends on the amount on tiles that go on the walls/floors, if less tiles on the walls, proceed with installing the floor first. And once you have a levelled flooring. You can proceed tiling the walls based on the level of the floor. As you have mentioned using Vinyl flooring. I would recommend proceed with the installation of the sink and toilet first. With vinyl flooring. You will need to make sure the floor is as straight as possible and clear off any debris. • Replace Radiator : isolate water before disconnecting the radiator. Make sure you have strong fixing points. Hopefully i have answered all your questions. Regards, Mario

Keeping it short and simple: •Electricals and plumbing under the flooring, behind/in the walls and above the ceiling first. Electrical wiring and pipework should be in the right places including your towel rail or radiator. •Board the floor, walls and ceiling as appropriate. •Install the bath and or shower tray •Tank (water proofing) the shower and or bath areas. •Lay the flooring (Tiles, vinyl or other) •Install the wall coverings (Tiles, PVC panelling, plaster or other) •Install toilet and cistern, shower, shower and or bath screens, basin and taps as well as the radiator or towel rail. Then any additional cabinets, mirror, handles, rails etc. Good luck 👍

Rip out, get plumbing in place. Prep, tile walls then ceiling, silicone, fit suit, silicone again.
