Gas Works

Tenant had Gas cut off at property

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

I have a empty property where the previous tenant had the gas cut off as they did’nt want to pay the standing charge. The tenant probably did this about 20 years ago! I am now looking to get gas back into the house and a new boiler fitted, possibly a stupid question but who do I call to have the gas put back on? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Call a Gas Safe Engineer to check your Job and make sure it's Safe. You will need to select a supplier, who than arrange for a Gas meter to be installed and leave it capped until it's ready to be connected to new appliances etc.

Go online to this website: https://www.energynetworks.org/operating-the-networks/whos-my-network-operator There you can find who is your local Network Operator, and their phone number. Call them and explain exactly what you wrote here, and they will inform you if they need to do something in order to provide the property with gas, or if you need to pay any outstanding not paid gas, or anything like that. This is a free of charge service. Then, once they have provided the property with gas, they will cap the gas off just before where your gas meter is located. At this time, you will need to call a gas provider company, for example EDF, or British Gas or any of the so many available on the market. And they will provide you with a gas meter, likely one of the modern Smart Meters. Now you need to hire a qualified gas engineer, a member of the Gas Safe Register (you pay for this service) who will carry out a gas safety inspection on the property, gas pipe, gas appliances etc and will provide you with a report indicating if everything is safe or any improvement that needs to be done.
