Need to fill in a large hole on my driveway
Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 3.27 PM
Hi - I have a 2.5m diameter hole on my drive where I removed a circular raised wall. In some parts of the hole are the existing foundations but it is mostly soil. See pic here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j4csdnoj5dl1x0j/IMG_0852.jpeg?dl=0
The plan is to cover the diveway with angular gravel, so it moves less. The driveway is on a slight slope.
Any ideas what I could fill the hole with so it is sturdy and can hold the weight of a car? It does't need to look pretty because it will be covered by the gravel
Thanks, Nick
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Digging the footing of the original brickwork out would be a good start, then refill with type 1 and whack down to give the area stability. If covering with gravel then no further work would need to be carried out after this.
Hi Nick,
Sadly I can't load the photo, how ever going off your description your best best is to fill the hole with MOT type 1 (available at most hardware stores and builders merchants) then compact this down, add a weed membrane then your chosen gravel on top of that.
Exactly what toni answered put some membrane down before the gravel on top, thanks.

I’d personally leave the footing of the wall in unless you wish the gravel to be lower than the footing? Did soil out and replace with type one. 250 deep compacted down would be plenty for this and as the other guys have said weed membrane the whole driveway before putting any gravel down. No need to remove a footing when it’s probably going to be stronger than the type one :)
