Moving a gas meter

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

We have a gas meter on an external kitchen wall where we would like to build an extension for a toilet and washbasin. Is it necessary to move the gas meter to an external wall as I have heard it is very expensive to get it moved or can it be left where it is?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Depending on the gas service pipe, if it is PE pipe it is against service utilities regulations to build over it, in which case you would have to apply for an alteration with your gas transporter (depending where in the country you are) they will send someone out to have a look and advice you. Best to get it checked as if found built over it would be cut off and left until the alteration is paid for.

The gas meter will be ok if is the standard low pressure type. however if it is a medium pressure installation it must be moved externally. You can usually tell as the regulator on the inlet side of the meter will have a small reset lever on it.

It can be left where it is and I can also move it without too much expense if you wanted it outside the only bit I can’t move is the emergency control valve (a lever) as that would be cadents job
