I can see daylight from my boiler flue in the loft

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

I had a new boiler fitted 18 months ago and a vertical flue fitted. The vertical flue is the black plastic type on a weather slate/lead tile flue. But when I look at the flue and directly upwards I can see daylight/the sky (from a certain angle). Is this normal? I haven't had any major water ingress, but it could just be running down the felt and into the gutter. I have seen a few drops on the loftboards now and then but thought it may be condensation. But I can clearly see daylight from a certain angle and can feel the wind/cold coming through from this gap. Is this normal and if not what is missing or why is it going this? I've seen a few similar posts from other people about this, is it just the design of these kind of flues

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

its generally because most plumbers need a hole big enough to get a bus through for a small pipe. it will leak.

The flue should go through a weather slate, you shouldn’t be able to see the sky. You’ll need a gas engineer to aid a roofer, or find a gas engineer that can do both.

Hi there sounds like you have a problem with the lead tile it may not be fitted properly and might just need adjusting or the flue terminal might not be fitted properly and might need to get adjusted to marry up to the tile. Obviously i would need to get up there and inspect it!!

The flue should go through the flashing and sit back into a part that goes between the flue and the flashing. When you had the new boiler fitted did the installer change the flashing or just the flue the new boilers have different size flanges that seat into the flashing in the roof. You shouldn’t be able to see day light through it and I would recommend you call the installer back to sort it out.
