Bricklaying & Repointing

I have a 4" thick internal wall using 3" thick bricks. Is this common and safe?

Hi, hope you are all well. I live in an old circa 1960 bungalow and all my internal walls seem to be 4" thick including half inch render on both sides, making the bricks used for the wall construction only 3" wide. I thought all bricks were 4" wide plus render, making a 5" thick wall. Also all my internal door frames are one piece steel and hinged the wrong way. Should I leave them as they are to support the wall, and was this common practice back then? Many thanks in advance. Simon

The answer will depend on 2 circumstances 1 need to check if you have a lintel over the doors special on load bearing walls if you do then it's safe to remove the frames 2 if you don't have lintel mean the metal frame it's part of the structure and cannot be removed without installing new lintel above doors. Hope this help

3” blocks were common and nothing to worry about, however I’ve never come across steel internal door frames.

I have in the past built internal walls with 3 inch wide blocks , I’ve also taken down internal walls that were built using bricks laid on edge 3 inch face so yes it was a practice ,use of 3 inch wide brick blocks generally non load bearing but on site inspection would be necessary ,regarding steel frames and removal of the wall
