Change in quote and my obligations

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.57 PM

My roof had suffered some damage during the recent storms and needed emergency works. Contacted a roofing firm and was initially told a quote of 2000 after they had a look. I booked and paid for scaffolding as we were happy with that quote. Once we got the scaffolding up they came round and said the job can not be carried out without some other works now equalling 4600. I said that was beyond our budget and we would have to get more quotes for the work they proposed. Now the company is messaging me every day with what I feel is quite pressuring language saying the work needs done and they hav already paid for some materials. Now I did agree to start based on the 2000 quote but no contract was sent to me and non-work has started , no money has changed hands whatsoever. I really want to use someone else as their quotes have come back a LOT cheaper. I just wondered if anyone had any advice for my position here, am I liable for the materials for a job that is no longer the job if that makes sense ? Thanks in advance

dont know why you never got your insurance to deal with it if it was storm damage, if you have paid for the scaffolding then they have no out lay, most good tradesmen are booked up for months in advance and would just move on to the next job. good luck Alex

Yes I totally agree,if you have paid for the scaffolding costs then any decent company would wait until you contacted them to do the additional work when you where happy to go ahead

As no contract signed and have organised the scaffold yourselves there is no obligation on your part. Most companies even if have bought materials can always credit them back to a supplier. You are more than within your rights to seek cheaper quotes elsewhere. The only downside I can see is if the original company charge for quotes but most reputable companies do not
