Should I have a larger gas supply pipe?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.03 PM

I want to replace my 13 year old gas combi boiler. A local plumber has given me a quote. Another plumber (who has not yet submitted a quote) suggested that I also consider having a bigger gas supply pipe installed. The local plumber (who gave me the quote) never suggested that a larger gas supply pipe was necessary. Surely a new and up-to-date gas combi boiler would still be able to use the same gas supply pipe as the old boiler that it would replace? Please can you advise me?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi,it depends from the kW of your new combi boiler. For example :If you upgrade for a better combi boiler let's say from 24kw to 30kw ,installing a 22mm gas pipe is recommended. Overall at today a 22mm gas pipe is always recommended in new combi boiler installation and as far I have seen in new installation ,it is always 22mm. I did see 15mm but only in combi bolier already installed. Probably 13years ago a 15mm gas pipe was more than enough. Review the information with your fitter before go ahead with the work.

I have to say that I've never heard of this before and it seems to be a price inflation tactic. I would steer clear of that company

It will all depend on the size of the pipework you have from the meter to where your current boiler is a calculation will need to be done to make sure you will have enough gas flow to supply the new boiler effectively if it’s undersized it won’t work properly or be to regs

The size of the gas pipe required for your new boiler is calculated by the distance of pipe (taking bends/elbows into consideration.) between the gas meter and the boiler and also the kw output of the boiler. Generally speaking if it’s a average size house and the boiler isn’t too far away from the gas meter a 22mm supply would suit.

would always suggest running a 22mm gas supply to within 1 mtr of the boiler
