Clogged heat exchanger on boiler causing huge electricity bills??

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.42 PM

Our electricity bill has doubled in the past six months for no obvious reason. I have been checking appliances over the house with a meter and nothing seems to account for the ADDITIONAL £3 per day used in electricity. Except, our combi boiler finally ground to a halt last week. We are renting here and the heat exchanger was scaled up to the extent that no hot water was getting through. Since it has been replaced we have fantastic water pressure. Could this gradual build up of scale have accounted for our excessive use of electricity?? There hasn't been a similar spike in our gas usage. Just a thought. Thanks in advance

No. A combi is a 3amp appliance at best. This fixing of the boiler will not do anything to your electric bill. Secondly there would be a direct link to your gas consumption.

In short no, it has nothing to do with the boiler. Sounds like there is earth leakage or a high resistance joint somwehere on the wiring which is causing current to be drawn and is clocking up units on the electricity meter. As its a rental property ask your landlord for a copy of the Electrical Installation Condition Report he/she has for the property. If that has any insulation resistance issues detailed on it then this would tie in with the electricity usage. If the landlord does not have a report, ask that they get one carried out asap in order to rule out any wiring defects. Worst case is that this issue could also be a fire risk as well as costing money in wasted electricity!
