Damp Proofing

damp proof or electrics first

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.45 PM

Hi, I am currently buying a house that needs both a damp proofing and rewiring. I am just confused as to which one to get done first as I know there are wires and plugs where the damp work needs to be done, but will the rewiring ruin the damp work when they rip the old wires out and channel for new wires etc

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes, get the wiring done first as the damp proofing will need new plastering 1m high in the internal walls and so new wires can be buried. Otherwise you'll have to channel out the new plaster or get the cables surface mounted which would be a shame.

In addition to the answer already given I would say that if there is a vertical damp proofing membrane being fitted to the wall that it should go first, then the conduit and boxes fitted on top, prior to plastering. Fixings to be nylon when any puncturing of the membrane is necessary. This ensures no corrosion of the box or damp transmission.

Hi. If the walls are getting the plaster stripped back and a cavity membrane fitted . I would do the dpc and membrane first then fit the wiring and boxes to the surface of the membrane. The plastic plugs that the membrane is fitted with will take a screw or nail to the centre of the plug without compromising the integrity of the membrane. Then you can just plaster over the cables. Hope this helps.
