Is an electrical safety check after a short circuit caused by a leak?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.45 PM

Hi, a leak through our ceiling from the upstairs flat caused a short circuit where there was water around a ceiling light just over a month ago. The corridor lights, bathroom lights and extractor fan are connected to the same circuit. While the ceiling was wet we had this circuit switched off. It has dried now and hasn’t tripped since the leak stopped. The affected ceiling light is blown. Should we get an electrical safety check carried out, or is this not necessary?

Just get an electrician in to identify and remedy the fault. No need for an EICR for a fault.

For my self i wouldn't be bother to call electrician. If you are 100% sure its all dry, and its not tripping again, replace broken light bulbs, and should be all good. All fuse boards now has RCD braker, and if it trip again i would definitely call a electric engineer. Thats for myself, what i would do.

In short yes - At least needs a visual inspection to find any water damage to connections, signs of arcing / smell of burning and ultimately using a test meter.

As you've had a leak which has ultimately affected the electrics, I would suggest you get a electrician to give it a visual as they should be able to see any immediate dangers. Always good to get a expert opinion even if it's for a peace of mind!!
