Is it a good idea to chase boiler pipes down a wall?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

Hello, I am hoping someone can advise... we are replacing a system boiler in a house we have purchased and the contractors we spoke to are proposing that it is kept in a kitchen wall cabinet (it will be either a Vaillant EcoTEC Plus 37kW or a Worcester Bosch Greenstar Style 35kW). The pipes will be chased down the wall underneath and will therefore sit behind a splashback. There will be a base cabinet underneath. I have expressed concerns about how inaccessible the pipes will be but I was told that I will never need to access them and that this is the way things are done now. I understand that this is aesthetically nice but is it the right thing to do? We will have the recommended clearances above and below the boiler but not more. What happens when it comes to changing the boiler? Are all the pipes exactly in the same place if we stick to the same brand? Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks so much for your advice

You raise a good point Maggie, your contractors could surface mount the pipes and box them in, this would make them more accessible in the future.

Are you sure it's a system boiler as unless you have a massive house those outputs are huge, no it's not a good idea to do that the constant expansion & contraction will cause the plaster to fall to pieces, surface pipes & box them

Neater to chase them in. Make sure the pipes have no joins or soldered pieces in the hidden parts. Your boiler should last between twelve and fifteen years but if you do need access before then have half a metre of tiles so that you can match up. ( That’s if you are going to tile over the hidden pipes of course) Guy
