Removal of load bearing wall

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

We're currently in the process of extending our kitchen. Our back supporting wall has been removed and propped up whilst awaiting the steel. I thought this would be done quickly, however we've been waiting a week and the steel won't be going in for a few more days. Is this normal/ will our house be ok? Also we had a few cracks appear quite quickly upstairs above where the wall has been removed which has damaged tiles and I'm nervous it might not have been done properly, so again I'm looking for reassurance really? The cracks aren't too wide...probably about 2mm.Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou

Steel Akro supports should have been used. Your steels should be installed ASAP and to the Stuctual engineers Specifications. If you are concerned speak to your’s structural engineer and your builder. Hairline cracks are not uncommon however every inspection is paramount and need to be signed off as safe.

The wall should not be taken out until the steel is ready to go in on the same day, the work should all be done on the same day. You properly have some movement going on as this is been left with no steel fitted. The builder needs to fit the steel asap, to make sure it is safe.

Yup im with the above, acro's do a good job but steels should go in asap, i once removed a whole wall supporting another floor and the person above was worried because i had to adjust the door. This is in comparison to a building in Mayfair where you could put your finger through cracks, both can be acceptable on the sayso of an engineer but we all know which one is better!@

As long as the acro props are installed properly it will be fine.

Your Builder should not have removed the walls till the steels were on site. If there is cracking upstairs then it is clearly the fault of the builder. You should put this in writing to him and ask him if he is going to repair all settlement damage because he has not done these works within 48 hours of removing a load bearing wall. Do not give any more payments to him till he agrees in writing to fix and redecorate all damaged walls and ceilings.
