Fixing timber wall plate (to hand joists) to brick wall

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

We are doing a first floor extension. The joists of the floor (first floor) is hung on timber wall plates attached the wall. The timber wall plate is 11 feet long. Its attached to the wall using four 1/2 inch bolts. Do you think thats enough to hold the weight of this first floor bedroom...? *********************************************************************************************** This first floor bedroom is on top of my car port. So they put a timber wall plate on my wall and my neighbor's wall and the joists are running between these two wall plates. Yes, they have used M12 shield anchor bolts. But there is only 4 of them on either sides (on 11 feet log timber wall plates around each bolt around 80 cm apart). I am wondering if that is enough to hold the weight. Thanks everyone who answered. All sorted now. Engineer visited. Advised to add more bolts in between … As all of you advised 400 to 450 mm apart …

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, From your description, that doesn't sound right. 4x 1/2" Bolts? I assume there is a reason that the wall plate cannot sit on top of the new brickwork? If this is the case then you need to bolt through with at least 4" into the wall through the plate M12 shield anchor bolts or a resin and threaded bar. Along the length 400mm spacing between the bolts. It's good you are asking the question, but really your builder or carpenter should know this, especially as its supporting an entire floor. Hope that helps.

It should be stated on your structural engineers drawings the suitable and correct bolts and hangers to use They will take in to consideration the weight and load bearings They will also tell you how many to use and how far apart the should be spaced usually I would install them at 400 centres

As above the spacing should be 400mm apart to a maximum of 600mm, also it would be a good idea to make sure the joist hangers are both galvanised and wrapped over the top and behind the wall plate before it’s fixed in position.

Each floor joist should be tied to wall with joist hangers or the wall plate should be fixed at 400 centres
