Can silicone seal around windows deteriorate with time?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

Hi hope everyone is well. Just recently I have noticed that there is a slight draft coming in from around the edge of a couple of my upstairs windows. Is it possible that the sealer outside needs repair/replacing. In one case the wallpaper has pulled away where it joins the window frame. The windows are about 10 years old. If it is the sealer that needs renewing is it an expensive job or could I attempt myself. Appreciate your advice. Keep well. Regards JR

Yes could be the silicone on the outside and the caulking inside has broken down over time or not done properly when installed. Can easily be re-done could be done yourself if your good with a silicone gun. But shouldn’t be too expensive if you used a professional depending on the amount of windows that need doing shouldn’t cost more than 1 days labour for 1 installer

When properly applied, silicone is a multipurpose adhesive and sealant that creates a waterproof, protective seal, and can last up to 20 years. If it does need re-doing to stop a draft or water entering, then can easily be done by yourself or someone else and wont take to long to fix

Silicon doesn’t last forever , with the movement of the house over the years this could lead to the wallpaper being slightly pull away , it’s just a case of removing the old and putting new in to seal everything back up

Yes, caulk shrinks over time and depending on damp/insulation silicon can discolour. Old mastic/caulk can be removed and resealed.
