Bricklaying & Repointing

Repointing the damp proof membrane

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.26 PM

The cement surrounding the damp proof membrane is crumbling. My first quote said that when they remove the crumbling cement, it would also destroy the membrane and therefore cannot guarentee the waterproof membrane will still be intact after filling in the new cement. Is that a general issue or shall i try and get someone else to replace the crumbling cement on the damp proof level?

If it’s under guarantee, anyone that messes with what’s under guarantee will invalidate the guarantee. Ask the original installers to come back and re do it under their guarantee

It wouldn’t destroy the membrane at all its quiet a tough plastic material, if it’s a large area I would recommend grinding the cement out and repointing it up should have no issue at all.

Normally when it comes to repointing damp course membrane joint. You can carefully remove existing pointing using a small chisel such as a plugging chisel this should minimize the damage when removing. The depth only needs to be 15 - 20mm then you can repoint.

I've never heard of crumbling cement on a DPM ? ( a DPM is internal under concrete floors out of sight ) as long as any DPM or DPC is not punctered you should have no damp issues ! PJ
