Insulation

Roof rafters insulation

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.41 PM

I have loft space that I would like to use for storage. The floor has been insulated with rockwell and boarded up. However, on the ceiling of the loft there is no insulation between the roof rafters. It's just the tiles and the breathable membrane, no insulation. I've been advised that I don't need to insulate between the roof rafters. However am I OK to board up the loft space ceiling and What is the best wood, boards , mdf etc.to use for this job. Please advise. Thanks

Don’t insulate your rafters!!! It’s fairly futile for one thing. Unless you sit up in your loft for hours with a radiator on, you need to insulate the envelope of the heated living quarters. Hence why we insulate the ceilings and not the rafters. Besides, installing insulation into the rafters of a property where breathable felt is designed to provide adequate ventilation into the roof space, then you’re likely to cause serious condensation issues.
