Boiler turning off and on frequently
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.41 PM
Hi I’m running a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30RI heat only gas boiler. I regulate it with a Honeywell room thermostat. After it reaches the target temperature, it goes into a cycle of off for 5 minutes, then on for 5 minutes, which means it’s on and using gas for 30 minutes per hour. The house stays at an even temperature. I’m wondering if it is turning on and off too frequently and if this is damaging the boiler. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you

In my opinion the boiler should go off when room thermostat is satisfied (means achieved desired temperature), system need an inspection.

Hi there, I hope this message finds you well today! The honeywell thermostat might be installed in an area that frequently falls below the minimum temperature of the honeywell thermostat, for example if the minimum temperature set on the honeywell control is set to 10°c and the room or passage temperature falls below 10°c due to a cold draught or lact of insulation it can cause the unit to cycle. It would need an engineer visit to properly access and diagnose the issue you have. I hope this helps and wish you a wonderful day further. Sincerely With Kind & Warmest Regards! How large and well-insulated is your house? 30kW for a heat only boiler is huge - suitable for 6+ bedrooms. To put it in context, an 18kW boiler will do a 4 bedroom house. So if your boiler is too large then it will frequently cycle on and off as it gets up to temperature very quickly.

Is your time clock on all day. If yes then your boiler will continue to cycle keeping the house at the desired temperature

Maybe the thermostat is on it's way out, get an inspection done by a gassafe engineer
