Electric Towel Rail Radiator in wet room

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.41 PM

Hello, I have currently in my bathroom electric towel rail radiator and I would like to convert it on wet room. Bathroom is small 1.2m width x 2.4m long. Wet room will be without any glaa panel and radiator(socket and connectors) will be fitted as far as possible( circa 2m from shower outlet). Can I do that in wet room this size? I can't have central heating there cause pipeworks are too far. Please give me advice.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You will need an electrician registered with a competent persons scheme to design, install, test, certify and notify this kind of work as all new electrical work within a bath/shower room is notifiable to building control under part P of the building regs. However I will give some vague and general advice to relieve some of your design related stress... from your description above you will have some options available to you which your electrician will explain in detail, probably with the design of your bathroom in one hand and their tape measure in the other. I can’t give detailed advice as it will involve complicated details like IP ratings and zone measurements, which based on your description I think you’re unlikely to know much about which again leads me to suggest you should call in a local sparkie.

You can position towel rail in zone two but you can't have a socket outlet or switched fused spur within 3m of the basins water outlet. You can on the other hand have a connection unit in zone two, this is a minimum of 600mm horizontally away from edge of the bath for instance. Please refer to bathroom zoning section 7 of the IET Wiring regulations BS7671 18th edition (2018).

It’s not advisable to install any electrical equipment in wet rooms unless the equipment is rated IP65 or above. However, you can install a radiator providing the fused connection unit is located outside the wet room through the wall and the cord secured and sealed to make it weather proof, please bear in mind due to condensation the radiator will oxidise over time Thanks
