Why does my bath tap run so slow?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.41 PM
Hello. Just wondering the different reasons why my bath tap runs so slow? There's about half the amount of water coming out the tap that should and it takes forever to fill a bath! Thank you very much.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, the filters may be blocked with debris. If it is a tap with spindle handles, the jumper inside the tap body could be faulty and is not opening fully.

Could be any of the following depending on your situation:
1. New undersized combi boiler fitted replacing either a larger one or a traditional hot water cylinder. A 24kw combi will only produce about 8-9 litres per minute whereas a 35kw boiler will produce 16-18 litres a minute.
2. Not enough distance between cold water loft tank and hot water cylinder on a traditional system (insufficient head).
3. Unvented cylinder fitted with an incoming water main that is too small. (Older properties usually had a half inch main that often is not sufficient for an unvented cylinder.
4. Or, it could be something simple like a faulty tap (if only the bath is affected) or a twisted or crimped flexible hose!
5. Finally, if you live in a hard water area it could be scaling up in the tap or loft tank or top of the hot water cylinder at the outlet.
6 Really are too many possibilities without knowing your circumstances!

Could be a number of reasons. Usually on old gravity systems the hot tap feed was run in 3/4" or 22mm pipe to provide a quicker flow rate. People then come along and fit a new bathroom and use flexible hoses will very small bores, sometimes as small as 8mm which can restrict the flow to the tap, even at mains pressure. Another possible reason could be an isolation valve which is not fully open.
