Plastering & Rendering

Exterior Insulation

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.41 PM

I’ve seen some Houses being rendered and they have why looks like boards put on first prior to rendering. Is this insulations for older houses abs if so, is it recommended? Also, what is the difference between render and k render?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The board is insulation, for instance Celotex. Typically this is because the house has solid constructed walls, so no cavity wall insulation. The house is then rendered, or meshed and monocouche applied. K rend is a type of render that is coloured, so doesn’t require painting like traditional renders.

it is recommended by the government to reach its net carbon output targets, its not good for old houses as it seals them up creating dampness neither is render nor cavity wall insulation unless the house is well maintained & well ventilated which is about 10% of the current uk housing stock

The insulation panels come in different thickness ranging from 20mm to 120 mm (but you can combine them too) Mainly used to insulate the solid brick walls, but also the ol' dormer style walls (which are timber built and ply wood, then tiled over) There are also "breathable" boards too. These have some holes through and yes, they can be filled over with the render but the air left inside will regulate the temperature/humidity, thus making this more breathable. Normal render is just sand and cement (you can add lime to it too) whereas K-Rend or similar are more silicone based and are coloured through. Somewhat flexible too and easy to clean. Hope this answers your question
